How do you know it’s time for a website refresh?

One of the most common statements I hear from entrepreneurs and creatives is “I am working on updating my website”. It feels like everyone is in the middle of updating their website or they are thinking about updating their website. The question is when is the right time to take on such a huge project like a website refresh? This project is going to take away from the time you are marketing your business and working on client work. Is it worth it?

“When is it worth the time to take on a website refresh?”

From experience a website project is a HUGE project. I can speak to this from the service provider’s point of view but now I can speak to it from the client’s point of view. I took on myself as a client over the last few months and let me tell you there is a lot to completing a website refresh so you are happy with the results and ensuring you are setting yourself up for success and growth (aka you won’t be itching for a new website in 6 more months!)

The only reason you should be doing a website refresh.

If you have said the words, “I want to update my website” I am sharing with you THE ONLY reason I believe you should take on a project like this (and yes, I’m telling you this even as a website designer).

The only time I believe you should be focusing on updating your website is if your services/products/ target market have changed or if your services/products/ target market are not 100% clear on your website! BOOM! that’s it!

Now this can also mean you’ve become much more clear in these areas as your business has evolved (this was my reason for a rebrand!). Keep reading to see how this actually unfolds on your website.

“Having a good website is a huge opportunity”

A good website is like an employee that works for you 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Your website should speak to your target market, outline exactly what you are offering and have a way to purchase or get in touch with you!

Your website should be doing 3 things for you VERY well:

  1. A website is your home base for your business. It’s your chance to speak directly to your target market and create a space on the internet that is just for them where they can come and feel like this is exactly what they need.
  2. Your website is your opportunity to make it crystal clear what you are providing to your target market and how they can buy from you. If you’re ideal client lands on your site and can’t describe in one-sentence what you are offering then you are missing a huge opportunity.
  3. Your website gives your target market a way to get in touch with you or buy from you. If there are not clear call to actions (in simple terms CTAs just mean buttons or ways for website visitors to click through to either purchase or contact you) then you are attracting your clients but leaving them hanging to dry!

If any of these areas are out of alignment then consider a website refresh.

I am going to be sharing more details of the process I went through with my website refresh and some areas you should be focusing on to make sure you are building a strategic website that is going to grow with you.

I am going to be sharing everything from what a domain and hosting package is to how to write successful copy and how to build a 5 page website that is going to knock your socks off! If you know a website refresh is for you let me know in the comments.
